A common problem among many of the adults I know with ADHD is that we don't have the answer to a question we've been asked since childhood. What do you want to be when you grow up? Stephen Tonti summed it up well in his TED Talks Presentation, when he describes the many hats he has worn in his lifetime, which include, but are not limited to: actor, director, scuba diver, physicist and stopwatch repair man. He then goes on to say that it's not that people with ADHD lack focus, it's just that many of us have such wide interests it's hard for us to focus on one singular thing we want to do. I am by no means an exception to this rule. Here are some of the other things I still want to be when I grow up:
- A New York Times Bestselling Author
- A famous blogger (though I think I'll pass on Perez Hilton's lifestyle)
- A full time Etsy artist
- A chef
- A veterinary technician
- A boarding barn manager
- An extension agent
- A riding instructor
- A horse show judge
- A dog walker
- A camp director
- The person who comes up with the names of makeup
- A dog groomer
- An interior designer (though I might need to learn to paint)
- A horse show groom
- A photographer
- A dog trainer
- A personal shopper
- A massage therapist (for people or animals)
- A personal trainer
- A gardener
- A farmer
- A baker
- A party planner
- A youth programs coordinator (like at a state park or within a bigger association)
- A wedding planner
- The person who gets to put together the I Spy photos.
- Life coach
- A direct sales rep
- Hippotherapist (a therapist that uses horses in their practice to treat physical and emotional issues)
- Saddle fitter
- Seamstress (although my sewing skills would need some major improvement)
- Motivational speaker
